What Else Have We Done? What Else Will We Do?

Vincent spent most of May in Bangkok and Vietnam working on a CDC-sponsored hospital research study. During his absence from home, Grace spent a few days with the Hsu parents (Eugene & Alice) in Maryland and had a ball exploring the nation's capital.

To help celebrate Independence Day, Vince ran the 10K Peachtree Road Race with 55,000 other runners in downtown Atlanta.

Grace is now volunteering three times a week at Emory University Hospital and at Egleston Children's Hospital. Her assignments vary-- she has been a librarian, orderly, and a liaison between family and doctors.

From July 15 through 21 we will be joining the Hsu family for our family reunion to be held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

In August, Vincent has plans to return to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), as well as conduct some research in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Grace plans to definitely join him for that trip as it's so close to home! In late September, he will be in San Diego presenting the results of an influenza outbreak investigation at an infectious disease conference.

Vince & Grace Honeymoon in
New England and Canada

Although six months late, Vince surprised me with a belated honeymoon! A wonderful ten-day trip from June 13 through 22, almost evenly divided into thirds, we spent three days in Boston; three in Bar Harbor, Maine; and the last three in Nova Scotia, Canada. In Boston, we stayed at the historical Marriot Custom House in the heart of downtown.  We explored the city mostly on foot, learnt different aspects of America heritage, and enjoyed the architectural and cultural diversity of Boston (photo of Boston harbor above). Besides doing the usual touristy stuff, we were able to catch up with some friends, Patty & Tiffany Tan, and had some yummy Malaysian food!

We then began our "nature" portion of our trip by renting a car and driving up the beautiful Maine Coast to Acadia National Park, where we stayed at the historic summer hotel on Mount Desert Island, since converted into a B&B. Our hostess grew up in Malaysia in 1930's and had many things in common with me. No wonder there seemed to be an affinity between us. Vince & I spent most of our days outdoors, hiking the Acadia mountains, soaking in all the breathtaking views and the company of each other. Sea kayaking coastal Maine (photo) gave us a glimpse of its legendary beauty; curious seals would occasionally pop up near our vessel.

To cross over to Canada, we took a high speed catamaran across the Bay of Fundy into Nova Scotia, and drove along the coast looking out for lighthouses and historic landmark. Gorgeous purple lupin flowers were everywhere (right). We stayed at a B&B on a farm with alpacas, sheep and llamas. Mind you, despite talking about animals during breakfast it was a very romantic stay. Our hostess prepared a candlelight gourmet breakfast every morning with music playing softly in the background.

Many quaint seaside villages, including our favorite, Lunenburg (above), dotted the landscape. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because the town is largely unchanged and many of the original buildings are still in pristine condition since its founding almost 250 years ago. While visiting Lunenberg, we were fortunate enough to spend a few hours sailing on board the Eastern Star. Our captain was gracious enough to give each of us a turn at the wheel (left).

On our last day in Canada, we stopped by the city of Halifax en route back to Maine, visiting historic churches, a maritime museum (with many Titanic artifacts), and a wonderful city park. The next day, it was back to Boston and Atlanta.

Yes, it was a wonderful honeymoon. The only thing that we wish we had was a little bit more time to enjoy it.  --Grace
