Generations of Phangs

We Phangs (on Daddy's maternal side) are a close knit group given our size. Daddy keeps in touch with most of the clan descended from N.T. Phang (1875-1961), my great-great-grandfather. He had six children, with all in that generation having a reputation for longevity. My great-grandfather, Paul Yin-hee (1899-1989), passed away a few months short of his 90th birthday. Of his three surviving siblings, my great-aunt Helen in California is 99, great-aunt Selina is 90 (see the January 19 blog; her condition continues to improve), and great-uncle Philip is 96. I get to see Uncle Philip & Aunty Paz often because they stay during the winter with daughter Aileen, who lives close by us!

This photo with the Pengs, taken Jan 27,  says a lot about our family history with great-uncle Philip, 96, the second-oldest living member in the Phang clan and me, the youngest (so far). His secret? Eat right, exercise, and trust in God.

At the Selby Botanical Gardens

Sarasota has a wonderful botanical garden near downtown by the bay. Named for Marie Selby, the wife of a multimillionaire, the 13-acre Gardens are best known for its orchids and bromeliads. This is my first time visiting any type of botanical garden, and I think I understand why my folks love it so much. As with other scenic areas, great views can be had while feeding and diapering. This was our last stop on the Sarasota weekend tour before heading back to Orlando to see Yi-por for a chicken rice dinner!

Two Daddys

Huh? “Two Daddys?” you ask. Yes, we visited an ice cream store called Scoop Daddy's on St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota, an iconic store filled with nostalgic memorabilia. I didn't do much except watch my folks eat ice cream and sorbet. Then we checked into our hotel, and my real Daddy entertained me by reading. That was much more interesting.

Top: Looking bored at Scoop Daddy's. Well, you would be too if you were in an ice cream store but couldn't have any ice cream! Bottom: Much more engaged in our hotel room as Daddy reads one of my favorite books, God Made Me.

Gulf Coast, Revisited

With another trip to the Florida Gulf Coast in two weeks, I'm becoming a seasoned traveler. The reason this time? Daddy's brass group performed at Palmetto SDA Church. Given the longish drive, we decided to stay overnight and enjoy the weekend. Highlights included visiting Emerson Point Preserve, and driving down Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key. But my favorite places were in Sarasota. We attended an arts festival on St. Armand's Key where there is a great ice cream place called Scoop Daddy's, and visited downtown Sarasota and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Too many pictures for one blog entry so here's our photo of the day.

Mommy gets creative with me at Emerson Point Preserve. Why not, the scenery's beautiful. Fortunately, the sign behind us says "no fishing," not "no diapering."

Emi's Florida Hospital Fan Club

Thursday was another visit to the Florida Hospital Medical Plaza for a checkup with my oncologist Dr. Selsky, which went very well. Mommy, however, always makes it a point to make sure my trip mixed business with pleasure, stopping by to see some friends. Today, I visited with Katherine and Rosa, two of Mommy's co-workers. And it was such a pleasant surprise to also run into Dr. Jean Fung, who was the surgeon who assisted with my own surgery. She commented to me that I was one of her smallest patients ever, and was so pleased to see me growing so well. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Fung was there when Hurricane Katrina struck. She remained in the hospital to evacuate patient victims and attend to remaining patients, a true heroine in my eyes!

Mommy's Birthday Celebration

Although I usually blog about myself, I suppose it is OK to give others the spotlight on occasion. This past Sunday was Mommy's birthday, so Daddy took her out to eat at Roy's. No, I'm not talking about Roy Lukman's (Mommy's boss) home, but Roy's Restaurant, a Hawaiian-inspired fusion seafood restaurant. Roy's presented Mommy with her own personalized birthday menu, and the chefs went out of their way to accommodate her dietary restrictions in the most delectable way. The fish I heard just melted in their mouths, and topped off with custom dessert for Mommy! As for me, I was at Yi-por's home learning to speak Canadian by Uncle Ed and his relatives from way up north. I think we could all call it a great evening, eh?

Daddy & Mommy enjoying their Hawaiian-inspired desserts. Mommy's consisted of an off-menu fruit assortment with glaze and shredded coconut, completely non-dairy non-soy, while Daddy had their Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé a la mode. Unfortunately Roy's couldn't make that one non-dairy.

Reflections after a Warm Bath

Today is one of those nice lazy Sundays. It was quite stormy and cold last night, with lows in the 40s. But it's sunny this morning, and Daddy & Mommy had a nice shower this morning, while I had my bath. Also, today is Mommy's birthday and so Daddy is taking Mommy out to dinner tonight while I visit at Yi-por's place. I don't understand why I can't go to the restaurant as well - I'm fairly well behaved, but oh well. The good thing is tomorrow both of them are off work for the MLK Holiday so I get to spend more time with my parents.

This picture was taken after receiving a nice warm bath. I've started to react to myself and others through the mirror.

My Great Grand Aunty Sin-chin Hospitalized

Just a quick update for those on Nai-nai's side of the family, the Phang clan. Last week, my great-grandaunty Sin-chin (Selina) Poong, 90 years old, suffered a stroke in her home in San Francisco and is currently hospitalized at St. Francis Hospital. She had been down for at least 24 hours and was found quite hypothermic, requiring emergency surgery. Fortunately she has improved but remains hospitalized and unable to swallow. Her children have started a blog for her to keep family and friends informed of her progress. It is at http://www.saintfrancismemorial.org/About_Us/CarePages/index.htm and after creating a user name and password, the care page name is "Selinapoong." We wish her a speedy recovery and the best to the Poong family.

Last Day at the Coast

This is my last entry from last weekend. All fun things must come to an end. Yeh-yeh and Nai-nai had to fly back to Maryland; we're heading back to Orlando. However, it will be good to get back home: I miss my own crib and the familiar surroundings. Next time, I'll be reporting from home base.

Top: My goodbye photo with Yeh-yeh until we meet again! Bottom: Just before heading home, Mommy couldn't find an adequate place to change me, so she found an alternate spot: the trunk!

Solitude at the Beach

Yes, I'm still reminiscing about my weekend at St. Pete Beach. Daddy liked this photo below, but felt that details would be better presented in a larger size than fits this blog. Click the photo below if you wish to see it in full size.

Breakfasts with a View

No need to explain. These pictures by the beach say it all.

Weekend at St. Pete’s

This weekend my folks took me to see Nai-nai and Yeh-yeh (Daddy's parents), who were spending the week in the Tampa - St. Petersburg area. The 120-mile trip from Orlando to St. Pete Beach was the furthest I have ever been away from home thus far. And it wasn't disappointing; this was a weekend where I was able to explore! In fact, it will take two or three blog entries to tell you all about my activities, which is fine since weekdays can be largely humdrum.

Yeh-yeh is an elected official within the Adventist church (see his bio here) and was in Florida to attend church business meetings. He was in Asia during Christmas, so he hadn't seen me since my surgery. Church service was held in a conference room of the resort, after which I also met a lot of Yeh-yeh's colleagues as well. I think I behaved quite well throughout the service, and really, throughout the entire weekend. I'll have more to talk about tomorrow.

A Picture with My Hero

It was time for my 4-month old checkup with Dr. Quigley. Although I knew those nasty shots were part of the routine, it didn't matter. Although my weight has improved to the 20th percentile (just under 13 pounds), it didn't matter. And although everything checked out normal, it still didn't matter. What did matter was that I finally got a picture with Dr. Quigley. He was the doctor who felt that abnormality in my belly that led to the neuroblastoma diagnosis. Thank goodness Daddy remembered to bring his camera to my checkup. I finally have a picture with my hero!

Sleep in My Own Room? Uh, You Didn't Have To, Really . . .

My own room. That was my surprise. You'd think I'd be jumping up and down for joy? Maybe my parents thought so. But I'm not so sure I want my own room. For one, it's all the way on the other side of the house. And what if they don't hear me when I'm hungry? Plus, I want Mommy & Daddy close by. You would think they'd be bothered to have to walk all that way to attend to my needs when I could be where I am now, just steps away from their bed. Mommy tells me that sleeping in my own room is for my own good, that I'm old enough to do that. Hey, I'm barely 4 months old! But what can I do? The good news is that Daddy has to buy a changing table for me, so I don't have to start sleeping there tonight. The later the better. . .

Yes, new crib, built-in closet with lots of toys, books, and clothes, but I would rather just share a room with my parents. Pleeeze?

All Clear

All clear means two things in this entry. First, as I reported in my last entry, our 4-year old Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer broke down. Fortunately, it has now been fixed (the problem was an electrical malfunction affecting the compressor). We were able to salvage some freezer contents by transferring them to Yi-por's freezer, but the entire upper shelf of breast milk meant for me was spoiled and tossed. I had to go back on supplemental Alimentum (yech!) for a short time. Thus, Mommy is trying hard to continue to feed me and to build up a supply again so it can be used when I go to school. In this sense, all clear referred to our freezer and was not a good thing, but which will improve (see photo below).

The second meaning of all clear was very good, however. On Thursday I went in for my first CT scan followup of my neuroblastoma. It wasn't all fun - I had to take oral contrast early in the morning, then had an IV placed so they could inject me with IV contrast (required 3 sticks - ouch!), and take an awful-tasting substance called chloral hydrate to help me relax. The CT scan part itself wasn't a problem for me except for the fact these scans expose me to some radiation (click this link for a recent scientific discussion on the effects of repeated radiation and the risk of cancer development), so hopefully I won't require too many of these. But the good news is...you guessed it...ALL CLEAR! No evidence of recurrent tumor!

The contents of our empty freezer, now working but needing to be filled with Mommy's milk. Two bottles stand where the whole shelf used to be packed with milk. Time to start building up again!

Back to the Usual Routine

On New Year's Day, Aunt Lisa & her family along with Nai-nai headed back to Maryland after an eight-day stay. My cousins are very active boys, and while they were around it was a very animated household. It is now eerily quiet with me being the only child again. And now that New Year's has come and gone, it means we'll be getting back to the usual routine. Tomorrow I'll be going back to Loch Haven school, Daddy & Mommy resume work, and so forth. A few things however remain out of the ordinary: our refrigerator is still busted so we're waiting to get that serviced soon, I have a CT scan due this week to follow up my neuroblastoma surgery, and one more “surprise” awaits me that apparently my folks aren't telling me just quite yet. If you think you know, email me your thoughts so I can prepare! I'm sure I'll have comments to make about that very soon.

Our family takes a breather just before they head back to Maryland. Safe travels!

Happy New Year!

No news right now, but I, my mom and dad wish all of you a Joyous New Year! ~Emi

Daddy wishes he took this picture. It's a stock photo courtesy Microsoft Office Online clipart.
